Jürgen Klopp sends heartfelt message to Borussia Dortmund as Liverpool boss rules out one job

Liverpool.com - Fri, 05/10/2024 - 11:27

Jürgen Klopp may be focused on navigating his final two games as Liverpool manager but he made sure to pay a heartwarming tribute to his former club Borussia Dortmund after their European heroics — while also ruling out being a pundit for the showpiece final.

The Reds boss is now in the twilight period of his tenure as Reds boss, with only two games left of a reign that saw him etch his name into Anfield folklore. However, it is not just on Merseyside that the popular coach is revered, having also brought landmark success to Dortmund during a successful seven years in charge at Signal Iduna Park.

Having led the German giants to their most recent Champions League final, he will know just how much their upcoming appearance in the European showpiece will mean to the club's fanbase. Having won two domestic league titles with Dortmund, their loss under Klopp in the final versus rivals Bayern Munich in 2013 represents one that got away for coach and club alike.

With BVB having secured its place in the Wembley Stadium for June 1 following a dramatic win over two legs in the semi-final versus Paris Saint-Germain this week, the opportunity now knocks for the club to finally put that ghost to bed in London. Demonstrating his enduring bond with the club, Klopp was delighted to see his former employers advance to the final.

Speaking at a press conference prior to Liverpool's trip to face Aston Villa in their penultimate game of the 2023-24 season, the head coach was beaming with pride at his old club's historic result. Waxing lyrical, he confirmed that he will also be watching the game versus Real Madrid as a Dortmund 'supporter' rather than as a pundit.

"Supporter. Not pundit. Are you crazy?" he responded when asked by a reporter if he might be on TV for the match. "A big, big achievement."

After being questioned about the guise he plans to watch the game in, he also recalled watching the game as the sheer magnitude of the team's achievement was not lost on him. He confirmed: "I am really happy about that, I could watch and it was really nice to see. A nice story."

As for the matters at hand in his penultimate game as Liverpool coach, he was also aware that he will have to avoid a suspension in order to appear on the touchline for his last outing as boss. Laughing about the situation facing him, he quipped: "I've known for a long time.

"I only got two yellow cards! I've got calmer over the years. I don't need to be on the touchline but it would be cool, he admitted as he vowed to do his best to stay on the right side of the officials during the clash. "I will try absolutely everything to be involved in conversations!"

To add to the nostalgic mood at the press conference, Klopp also gave his own thoughts on the event in Liverpool which will be hosted in his honor later this year. Speaking proudly about the upcoming show at the M&S Bank Arena, he said: "I had a lot of evenings with Jürgen Klopp. It's neither my idea nor am I involved in the organization.

"I have no clue what happens that night. I said whatever people ask me to do that in that perspective, I will do. I make it happen. No problem to come a week after the season is over. If the people want that, I will be here. It will be good, I hope so. No pressure on the people organizing it."

Jurgen Klopp will do “absolutely everything” to avoid ban for Liverpool send-off

ThisIsAnfield.com - Fri, 05/10/2024 - 11:14

Jurgen Klopp has vowed to do “absolutely everything” to avoid a yellow card in Liverpool’s trip to Aston Villa, which would mean a ban for his final game.

With Klopp currently on two yellow cards for the Premier League season, another in Monday night’s clash with Villa would trigger a one-match suspension.

Unfortunately, that would mean he would be unable to be on the touchline for his final game in charge of Liverpool.

It is, of course, an unlikely situation, but remains one Klopp is eager to avoid – with plans in place for an emotional send-off in the meeting with Wolves at Anfield on May 19.

Asked, in his press conference ahead of the Villa trip, whether he knew he needed to avoid another booking, he said “yes.”

[embedded content]

“I know that already for long. When did I get the second yellow card?” he continued, with his bookings coming against Luton (November 5) and Burnley (February 10).

“By the way, we could turn it around as well and say I’ve only got two yellow cards! I think a few of my colleagues got suspended, right?

“Hmm! So I got calmer over the years, obviously.

“I don’t need to [be on the touchline], but it would be cool if I could do that!

“It will not be from my side. I will try absolutely everything to not get involved in any kind of discussions.”

If Klopp were to be banned, it would not be the first time in his almost nine years at Liverpool – in fact, he sat in the stands for the final home game of last season against Villa due to an FA charge.

But it would be a sad situation if he was forced to repeat that when Wolves arrive on Merseyside as, with there little riding on the season now, the focus will be on the departing manager.

Referee at Villa Park on Monday night will be Simon Hooper, who was the subject of recent comments from Klopp over his role in the Luis Diaz offside goal against Tottenham.

Chris Kavanagh is on VAR, assisted by Mark Scholes, while Tim Robinson – who booked Klopp in the 3-1 win over Burnley in February – is fourth official.

Jürgen Klopp recalls 'little argument' in dressing room that sparked Liverpool title heroics

Liverpool.com - Fri, 05/10/2024 - 11:13

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp cast his mind back to one of the most seminal moments in his tenure as Reds manager as he recalled a 'little moment' in the dressing room at Villa Park that sparked a famous revival.

The German coach is set to depart Anfield at the close of the campaign after nine storied campaigns in the hotseat, having won a clean sweep of major honors during his reign. With Aston Villa the opponents in his penultimate game in charge, he could not resist having a brief look back at a moment on the road that catapulted his team's title bid during their triumphant 2019-20 campaign.

Following a sobering first half during that clash in November 2019, it had appeared that the Reds' charge had run aground as they fell behind to an opener from Trézéguet after 21 minutes. However, two late strikes from Liverpool's Andy Robertson and Sadio Mané saw the visitors turn things around in dramatic circumstances.

Given the threat of Pep Guardiola's Manchester City to the Reds' charge that year, these goals represented a major moment in the team's eventual successful bid for a first Premier League title in 30 years. Looking back on a win that provided a springboard for success, Klopp has now given a rare insight into the events that sparked the team's recovery that night.

Speaking during his press conference before his final trip to Villa Park as Liverpool boss, he remembered: "The really special game when we won 2-1. We had a little situation in the dressing room. We could calm it down and turn the game around. We turned around two really special goals. We really wanted it. A very important one.

"Little argument between two players. But you will not get the names from me! A little situation," he continued, in a major revelation in relation to this often-recalled moment in the club's recent history. Paying tribute to his players from that evening in 2019, he added: "This group of players is really special. Things can happen when you work together. It's normal, it worked out."

Liverpool faces Aston Villa knowing its own fate is already secure for next season in terms of qualification for the Champions League. Completing the major objective of returning to Europe's elite continental competition represents success for Klopp and his new-look team, with the Reds had to settle for a berth in the Europa League last term.

Their opponents are very much in a similar situation that faced the Merseysiders during the previous campaign too, with Emery's team looking to secure a place in the top four in the final two games of the season.

Speaking in glowing terms about the Vila team he will face this time around, he said: "I saw them play last night, travel back today. Villa's last home game of the season. They want a good last home game after a good season. Pretty much in the Champions League. Unai is doing a good job."

As for Klopp's own situation ahead of the trip, he is also all to aware that he will need to be on his best behaviour to avoid a suspension for his final Liverpool game versus Wolves at Anfield next week. He laughed: "I've known for a long time. I only got two yellow cards! I've got calmer over the years. I don't need to be on the touchline but it would be cool. I will try absolutely everything not to be involved in conversations!"

Gary Neville doubles down on Liverpool analysis with Bruno Fernandes and Alexis Mac Allister claim

Liverpool.com - Fri, 05/10/2024 - 11:05

Liverpool’s midfielders are not as good as Manchester United’s, according to former Manchester United defender Gary Neville. The pundit was speaking in a new episode of Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet.

The episode also featured former Red Jamie Carragher, Roy Keane, Jill Scott and Ian Wright. It is Neville’s comments that are likely to attract the most attention, though, particularly from Liverpool supporters, as he doubled down on what he said at the start of the season — that Klopp would swap his midfield for Erik ten Hag's.

“Liverpool didn’t have any midfield at the start of the season,” he said. “They had Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott at the club. They signed [Wataru] Endō— would you have swapped Endō for Casemiro and [Sofyan] Amrabat at the start of the season? This is a serious conversation about players at Manchester United, and what happens to them.”

READ MORE: Jürgen Klopp responds to Darwin Núñez speculation as Liverpool boss admits season 'regret'

READ MORE: Liverpool can 'easily' win transfer race for 19-goal forward as Michael Edwards 'interest' noted

Neville undermined his claims for ‘serious conversation’ with what he said next though, comparing Liverpool and United players against each other. “You’d have taken [Mason] Mount over [Dominik] Szoboszlai, you’d have taken Casemiro or Amrabat over Endō,” Neville said. “You’d have taken [Bruno] Fernandes over [Alexis] Mac Allister. You’d have probably taken Kobbie Mainoo over Elliott, you might have taken [Scott] McTominay over Curtis Jones,” he added.

Some of these claims are not the most fanciful, but they also highlight the problem with judging players on past performance and not what they offer to their new club. For instance, many Liverpool supporters would’ve been pleased had the Reds signed Mason Mount last year —and he was of interest — whereas they may not have known as much about Szoboszlai. Endō has exceeded what were low expectations from the fanbase with his performances this season too.

From there, Neville’s logic falls away like wet cake. No Kopite who delighted in Liverpool’s 7-0 win over United last year would want Fernandes in their team. The Red Devils’ captain cut a petulant, disinterested figure that day, taking a swipe at Stefan Bajčetić and not bothering to track back when the Spaniard skipped past him.

Then we get to Mainoo versus Elliott. The United youngster is clearly a talent but he had played a total of 87 minutes of first-team football prior to this season. Elliott had 87 Liverpool games under his belt, Champions League goals against Ajax and Rangers, and an assist against United in the 7-0 thumping. No deal, Gary.

Neville saved the pièce de resistance for last: McTominay over Jones. Where do you start with that? It’s not that the Scot is a bad player, it’s the idea that you’d take him over a midfielder with the talent of Jones. It’s an absolute non-starter, much like McTominay has often been in the Premier League for a struggling United side this season.

There was at least an acknowledgment from Neville that the players would perform better for the Reds than they would for his beloved Red Devils. “If you gave Jürgen Klopp in a stable Liverpool that six, and swapped that five from Liverpool into Manchester United, what do you think would happen?” he pondered. “That’s my concern [that they’d be better at Liverpool]. Why is everyone dying on their feet at Old Trafford?”

A fair question, but not one that can entirely redeem the nonsensical comparison that preceded it. As much as Neville is entitled to his opinion, it’s not one to which Liverpool supporters should pay much attention.

Liverpool wonderkid with 13 goals told what he needs to do after “OK” season

ThisIsAnfield.com - Fri, 05/10/2024 - 09:39

From an outside perspective, Liverpool youngster Kieran Morrison has had an outstanding season, but his coach has labelled it “OK” and called for even more.

Morrison has been the standout performer for Liverpool U18s this season, with 13 goals and seven assists in 24 games, mostly from the right wing.

He has also featured five times for the U21s, including starts against Blackpool’s senior side in the EFL Trophy and in victory over Crystal Palace in the last 16 of the league playoffs last weekend.

But while U18s coach Marc Bridge-Wilkinson was full of praise for the 17-year-old, he believes it was only an “OK” campaign and laid out what he needs to do next.

“Kieran has done OK,” he told the club’s official website.

NEIL JONES: How Man United’s loss was Liverpool’s gain with Kieran Morrison

“He has definitely scored and created some wonderful goals across the course of the season but he still has an awful lot to do and he knows that.

“He has still got to learn to put in a performance over the course of the 90 minutes and I’m sure he will continue to do that and continue to improve.

“He has had a real positive performance this season and now we are just looking to try to help him improve further.”

That perhaps explains why, despite the confusion of some, Morrison has been kept in the U18s for the majority of the season.

He appears to have outgrown that level, but Liverpool will view a player of his potential as a long-term project and decisions will be made to ensure he does not step up too quickly.

The full-time move to U21s football is likely to come next term, while Morrison himself will be hoping for more opportunities in first-team training, having joined the senior squad this year.

Bridge-Wilkinson and his fellow coaches will be looking to keep the teenager’s feet on the ground, fully aware of the calibre of player he could become.

Morrison signed his first professional contract with Liverpool at the end of April, with the deal believed to tie him to the club until 2027.

PL Predictions: Chelsea to continue European surge at Forest

Fulham vs Man City, Saturday 12.30pm

Fulham, like many teams, have a horrific record against Manchester City, losing the last 15 matches in all competitions to an aggregate score of 55-7. But they haven't helped themselves in recent seasons by conceding a penalty in each of the last seven fixtures with Pep Guardiola's team - a wacky statistic that is hard to attach any logic to, yet one that could tempt a few punters into taking the 11/10 with Sky Bet for a penalty to be awarded in the match.

There's the right man in the middle for such an occurrence as Anthony Taylor has awarded more penalties this season than any other referee in the Premier League (13) while only West Ham (10), Everton (8), Man Utd and Sheffield Utd (both 7) have conceded more spot-kicks than Fulham (6).

In a turgid betting heat due to City being such overwhelming favourites, the penalty shout might be the answer.

Matthew Donohue takes charge of his first Premier League game here - and I'm always keen to back a cards angle when a referee steps into this environment for the first time. Ryan Christie to be carded is where my money will be going at 13/2 with Sky Bet. The tenacious Scot has become the destroyer for Andoni Iraola - if a player is there to be tackled, Christie will tackle him.

Bournemouth's Ryan Christie Image: Bournemouth's Ryan Christie is 13/2 to be carded

This is leading to a high foul tendency developing in his game, something which was on full show in the defeat to Arsenal last weekend where he was lucky to escape a red card for a foul on Bukayo Saka before eventually being carded later in the game. He's now made 23 fouls in his last 12 starts and has been shown a yellow in six of his last 22 appearances. His price is simply too big.

I'm always inclined to oppose cards when it comes to dead-rubber, end of season encounters. And this game fits the bill.

This could head down the path of being a very drifty game where Everton get in front and stay there with relative ease owing to their fantastic defensive record.

And the amount of cards shown per game this season is on the decline. In the first 18 matchdays of the season there were 46.5 cards shown per matchday as referees were keen on clamping down on time-wasting and dissent.

However, over the last five matchdays there have been just 32.2 cards per matchday with just two red cards being shown in those 60 matches. So that's a drop of about 1.4 cards per game.

Sheffield United's games have taken a sharp downturn on average cards shown in recent weeks. There's only been four yellows and one red shown in their last four Premier League fixtures, with no cards shown in their away day at Newcastle. I'm happy to play for a repeat of that to happen here by playing the "no card" option in the first player carded market landed at 12/1 with Sky Bet.

Newcastle are a force at St James' Park, scoring in all 18 home games this season and winning 11 of the last 16 Premier League games in front of their home fans.

But you'd need to be a braver punter than me to be taking 4/7 with Sky Bet on a home win, especially when you factor in how impressive Brighton were when dispatching Aston Villa last weekend. They restricted Unai Emery's team to just two shots and created a whopping expected goals figure of 2.53. It was their first win in seven games and it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see them back up that level of performance. The 11/4 on Brighton draw no bet is worth an interest.

Burnley will be relegated if they fail to win this game or if Nottingham Forest beat Chelsea in the 5.30pm kick-off.

A goals-based bet has to be the angle for anyone looking to get involved here, although you've got to be smart to find value with the traditional markets like over 2.5 goals trading at 1/5 with Sky Bet. Madness.

We want a goals bet that is a backable price - and that's the 2/1 for both teams to score in the first half.

Spurs have had big issues in starting games with any sort of conviction this season and they have conceded at least one first-half goal in 13 of their last 15 Premier League matches. In total, Spurs have conceded 29 first half goals in their 35 games - only four teams have conceded more.

Luton, Forest, Everton and Burnley have all managed to score before the break against Tottenham this season. The goals could flow at either end from an early stage.

Luton have to go big or go home. They will be relegated if Nottingham Forest better their result.

A big performance is required as West Ham are actually quite hard to beat at home, losing just two of their last 19 games across all competitions, and the atmosphere at the London Stadium will be more serene now the fans know what the situation is with David Moyes. They'll be giving him a good send-off.

The outright market looks a volatile one with it easy to make a case for any of the three outcomes, so I'm going to go back to an old favourite bet of mine for this season. Luton corners.

David Moyes, West Ham

There was a spell in January where Luton won 72 corners in nine games - so an average of eight per game - and luckily we were on most of those attractive lines at the time. Like their overall form, their corner count has suffered of late but with the returning Elijah Adebayo adding more threat in attack, they should give this fixture a good go.

When a team need to win, their corner count can see a huge spike and Luton play to win corners by working the wing backs into advanced areas and sending balls into the box. West Ham defend deep under Moyes so will be vulnerable to Luton's ability to win corners - as seen in the reverse fixture where Luton won nine.

They are 5/6 with Sky Bet to win five or more here and that looks a fantastic bet to play.

Not broke? Don't fix it then. That's my theory on backing Michael Olise to play a leading role for Crystal Palace.

That result against Manchester United had been brewing for a while under Oliver Glasner, who is pushing Olise to the forefront of his attacking strategy. The boss is encouraging his attacking players to play more centrally with the width being provided by the full-backs. That is making Olise a huge threat in the final third in really dangerous areas.

He usually plays wide but he is playing more within the goalposts and has now scored seven goals in his last seven starts. During that run he's also registered 33 shots with 16 of them hitting the target. That's a whopping average of 2.2 shots on target per 90 minutes. When assessing Sky Bet's prices it's the shot on target numbers for Olise that make the most sense from a value perspective here as we can grab 2/1 for him to have two or more shots on target in a game Palace are also fancied to win.

Permutations are going to be very important here for those having a bet as Nottingham Forest will know what they need to do after Luton and Burnley play at 3pm. If Luton lose at West Ham and Burnley fail to win at Tottenham - then Forest would be all but safe going into kick-off due to their superior goal difference over Luton. I can see that scenario happening.

If that is the case, then I want to get involved with Chelsea to win to nil here at 7/2 with Sky Bet.

Sky Sports News chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol explains the reasons why Nottingham Forest have lost their appeal against a four-point deduction for breaching the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Chelsea haven't kept a clean sheet in their last 14 Premier League away games - it's the worst run without an away clean sheet in the Premier League for 30 years. However, there have been signs in the last two games that the defence is becoming more of a cohesive unit. They haven't conceded a goal for 230 minutes, keeping back-to-back clean sheets at home against two dangerous attacks in Tottenham and West Ham.

Trevoh Chalobah is making a case to be Chelsea's most important and probably best defender. Chelsea go from conceding 1.6 goals per game without him to conceding just 1.1 with him starting - over a 24 game sample size. He's a seriously underrated player.

An away clean sheet is going to drop soon enough for Mauricio Pochettino's much improved side, who have taken 23 points from the last 36 available. Away win.

Arsenal to win to nil away from home is becoming a real comfort blanket of a bet. It's simple but is yielding fantastic returns. The Gunners, since the start of last season, are working at a 57 per cent win to nil ratio away from home in the Premier League. My maths make an Arsenal win to nil about an even-money shot yet we're getting 15/8 with Sky Bet here, so it has to come under consideration.

This phenomenal defence has now conceded just two goals in the last seven Premier League matches away from home and has conceded a per-90 average of just 0.67-worth of expected goals across the last 16 Premier League games. It's a remarkable number.

Ahead of Manchester United versus Arsenal, we look back at when Sylvain Wiltord scored the goal that sealed the Premier League title for the Gunners at Old Trafford.

I think the only way Manchester United can get something out of this game is if it becomes almost too easy for Arsenal.

Erik ten Hag's men are good at that, being so bad in a game that it lures the opposition into a false sense of security - as happened in their fixtures against Liverpool - and then in a 10-minute period United's big-game players come to the party and the opposition aren't mentally prepared.

Mikel Arteta is all about control though, so won't allow his business-like side take their eyes off the prize. Arteta will be heading there with his first priority being a clean sheet - if Arsenal achieve that, they win the game. The under 3.5 goals line at 4/5 with Sky Bet is the standout play at the prices.

Liverpool look a great bet here.

Villa will be drained from their trip to Greece on Thursday where they were bitterly disappointing, and Unai Emery has really struggled to contain Jurgen Klopp's teams in the past. Since beating Liverpool in the 2016 Europa League Final with Sevilla, Emery is winless in nine matches vs Klopp, conceding three or more goals in six of those nine matches, including in the reverse fixture this season that Liverpool won 3-0, and the game at Villa Park last season that ended 3-1 to Liverpool.

Villa have spent 153 nights in the Premier League top four this season so probably deserve their Champions League qualification on that basis, but they are limping over the line. They are becoming a very easy team to score against.

Over the last 15 Premier League games, they've averaged a per-90 expected goals against figure of 1.91 which is the fourth worst in the Premier League - even worse than Sheffield United. When assessing their big chance conceded data it gets worse - in the last 15 games only Luton have offered up more "big chances" as defined by Opta - that's 42 in 15 games to an average of 2.8 per game.

And Liverpool are the kings of creating those big chances - no team have created more this season than their 95.

Backing Liverpool to win and over 2.5 goals at 11/10 with Sky Bet looks a winner in waiting.
