Achterberg confirms Saudi departure

John Achterberg has officially confirmed his departure from Al Ettifaq, bringing an end to a two-season spell in Saudi Arabia and opening the next chapter in a coaching career defined by longevity, loyalty and serious goalkeeping expertise.

The former Liverpool coach announced the news on Instagram, explaining that his exit came by mutual agreement. His message carried the tone of someone leaving with respect rather than regret.

“I met many great friends and good people along the way, and I will always follow and support the club.”

For Achterberg, this was never merely a short stop after Liverpool. It was a new environment, a new challenge and a continuation of the work that had made him one of the most respected goalkeeping figures in the game.

Liverpool connection remains strong

Achterberg joined Al Ettifaq in June 2024 after leaving Liverpool at the end of Jurgen Klopp’s final season. His move was helped by the presence of Steven Gerrard, whose own Anfield connection gave the Saudi club a familiar feel.

Gerrard later departed after a poor run of results, but Achterberg stayed on, a sign of the esteem in which he was held by the club. That matters. Coaches do not survive managerial changes by accident. They survive because their work is trusted.

At Liverpool, Achterberg spent 15 years navigating different eras, from Kenny Dalglish to Brendan Rodgers and then Klopp. In modern football, where backroom staff often move as quickly as players, that kind of endurance says plenty.

Alisson role defines Anfield impact

Achterberg’s Liverpool legacy is perhaps best understood through Alisson Becker. He had followed the Brazilian from his Internacional days and pushed hard for Liverpool to move when the moment arrived in 2018.

It proved one of the club’s most important signings of the Premier League era. Alisson changed Liverpool’s defensive ceiling, their confidence and, ultimately, their trophy prospects.

With Achterberg part of the coaching structure, Liverpool won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. That is not coincidence. Elite goalkeeping coaching is often invisible until it fails. At Liverpool, it helped underpin greatness.

Next move will attract interest

Achterberg’s next destination remains unknown, but his reputation ensures interest will follow. His blend of experience, recruitment knowledge and technical coaching makes him valuable to any club looking to improve its goalkeeping department.

His academy work in Liverpool, Birkenhead and North Wales also shows that his influence is not limited to first-team football. For young goalkeepers, that pathway matters.

Achterberg leaves Al Ettifaq with goodwill and leaves behind a Liverpool legacy that remains secure. Some coaches are remembered for noise. He will be remembered for standards.
