Dominik Szoboszlai concedes he ‘might have set the bar too high’ in debut season

ThisIsAnfield.com - Tue, 05/07/2024 - 12:57

Dominik Szoboszlai has conceded he may have “set the bar too high” for his debut season at Anfield, with an impressive start to the campaign preceding a drop in output.

The Hungary captain arrived last summer and instantly impressed with the energy and impetus he injected into the midfield, something Jurgen Klopp‘s side had been severely lacking.

Szoboszlai started all but eight of the first 29 matches before injury struck, with two separate spells out with the same hamstring injury keeping him sidelined for 10 games.

He hasn’t been quite the same since, and that can be said of a number of players who returned from injury, with the No. 8 completing 90 minutes just twice since the start of March.

Having started the campaign well before dropping off, Szoboszlai has acknowledged that his expectations for his first season at Liverpool may have been higher than was realistic.

“Perhaps I set the bar too high because I think there were certain matches where I couldn’t bring out the best in myself,” he said in an interview with MLSZ TV.

“Or there are times when you don’t play well and in some people’s eyes you’re the worst player on the pitch, but it is not a problem because we get through these things together.”

Szoboszlai has thick skin when it comes to criticism, evidently, and he is clearly self-aware when it comes to dips in his performances.

As for what the 23-year-old had to learn quickly after moving from Leipzig to Liverpool, he said: “The (Premier League) is quicker, here you don’t have as much time to think as in the Bundesliga.

“Here you really need to know what you’d like to do with the ball before you receive it because if you don’t, you pretty much have no chance.”

And if players are exhausted, as Szoboszlai has appeared to be in recent weeks, the ability to do just that clearly becomes harder!

With two games to go, Szoboszlai has made 43 appearances this season to date with a return of seven goals and four assists, and it will be intriguing to see how Arne Slot uses him in 2024/25.

Liverpool showing ‘no indication’ of giving up on Darwin Nunez

ThisIsAnfield.com - Tue, 05/07/2024 - 11:58

Darwin Nunez‘s future has been thrust into the spotlight with his performances, but there’s no current indication he’s going anywhere in the summer.

Liverpool’s No. 9 has endeared himself to fans since joining the club in 2022, but he has equally frustrated by missing big chances and continually finding himself offside.

He is still only 24 and has 33 goals and 17 assists in 94 outings, but with plenty of change coming in the summer, doubts over his future have surfaced.

The Mail‘s Lewis Steele, though, noted that currently “there is no indication that Liverpool are in a hurry to give up on Nunez after just two seasons.”

The caveat to that is that they would “struggle to recoup the mega-fee they paid,” which could rise to £85 million, somewhat tying an arm behind Liverpool’s back when assessing Nunez’s future.

Nunez has widely been credited as a Jurgen Klopp signing, and his summer departure, in addition to the hierarchy at the club changing, will see the No. 9’s advocates quickly dwindle.

There is a player there, but Nunez deleting every trace of him in a Liverpool kit off his Instagram, in addition to his dejected body language, shows a player who may have indicated his desires.

With Liverpool having paid a hefty transfer fee and with Nunez holding a contract until 2028, it cannot be as simple as the Uruguayan checking out, if he has, in fact, done so.

Nunez’s future will, no doubt, continue to be debated for the remainder of the season and into the summer, but we can be certain Liverpool will not rush into any decision as they navigate their biggest summer change in almost a decade.

Liverpool 'serious' about $62m Willian Pacho transfer as contract 'talks' opened

Liverpool.com - Tue, 05/07/2024 - 11:41

Liverpool is getting 'serious' regarding a move for Eintracht Frankfurt defender Willian Pacho this summer, according to reports. The Reds will also look to extend the contract of defender Jarell Quansah, to solidify the defence for years to come at Anfield.

Quansah, 21, enjoyed a breakthrough season for Liverpool after injuries to Ibrahima Konaté, Joël Matip and Joe Gomez fast-tracked his route into the first team. The England U21 international made 31 appearances across all competitions, starting 25 of these outings in red.

According to The Mirror, Liverpool is now ready to offer a 'lucrative new deal' to Quansah in the coming months, given his development in the senior squad this season. The young defender is in line for a major role under new boss Arne Slot, who is set to take over from Jürgen Klopp in the coming months.

He only signed a new deal at the club last summer but Liverpool will now look to tie him down with a significant pay rise ahead of next season. However, the fresh deal for Quansah will not change the recruitment plans of CEO MIchael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes in the summer, as the Reds look to add further reinforcements within the back four.

One of which could be Frankfurt ace Willian Pacho. The 22-year-old has regularly been linked with a move to Anfield and fits the profile of the left-footed central defender the club so desperately needs. According to German outlet Bild, Liverpool is getting 'serious' regarding a move for the Ecuadorian international.

It is also believed that talks have already begun regarding a potential move to the club this summer, although Frankfurt could demand a figure in the region of $62million (£50m/€58m) to part ways with the player. Pacho has started 31 of the 32 games for his current side throughout the 2023/24 campaign, with Frankfurt currently sitting in sixth place within the Bundesliga.

Chelsea ace Levi Colwill is another name being considered by Liverpool. However, it is unlikely that the Blues will sell to a direct rival ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Liverpool.com says: Securing Quansah to a new, long-term deal is a smart move. The young defender has displayed confidence and experience beyond his years for the club this season. He has a huge future. Signing Pacho also addresses the lack of balance and depth within the squad. Especially with Matip leaving this summer.

Arne Slot responds to Liverpool transfer advice and outlines what he reads 'everywhere'

Liverpool.com - Tue, 05/07/2024 - 11:18

Arne Slot has responded to some advice given to him regarding transfers before he moves from Feyenoord to Liverpool this summer. The 45-year-old is set to replace Jürgen Klopp at Anfield.

Former Netherlands star Wesley Sneijder recently told Slot to avoid having too many Dutch players in the dressing room amid transfer links with Feyenoord duo Lutsharel Geertruida (via De Telegraaf) and Mats Wieffer (via HITC) — on the basis that not having a mixture could be unhealthy. But Liverpool will not be signing either purely on the basis that they know the incoming head coach.

Dutch sporting director Marcel Brands, who was previously at Everton, also had some advice for Slot when he arrives in the Premier League. Essentially: don't bother with signing players from the Eredivisie.

"Don't focus blindly on attracting five Dutch players," Brands said during an appearance on Dutch television. "He has to look very carefully at what he needs with his style of football. Only settle for top players.

"Slot will be working at one of the biggest clubs in England. You have to realize that. Liverpool has supporters from all over the world, and the pressure is always there. Just like Manchester United, they really are the biggest clubs in England, but it is a fantastic challenge."

The reluctance about moving for Dutch players almost certainly stems from the lack of success that Manchester United has had with signing several Ajax stars that Erik ten Hag knew well. Liverpool, however, will be nowhere near as wasteful in the transfer market and would never had thought about spending $108m (£85m/€100m) on Antony, as just one example.

"That’s good advice from people who have worked in the Premier League and have made their mark in football," Slot responded while speaking to Voetbal Zone. "But I don’t think you should always judge based on moments from the past.

"I also read everywhere about the success rate of Dutch coaches in England. There are so many variables. If a player is good, it shouldn’t matter what level he comes from. But at the moment, there’s no talk of anything because nothing has been officially confirmed yet."

Liverpool.com says: With Michael Edwards heading things up and Slot working as a head coach underneath Richard Hughes, the new Liverpool sporting director, the structure at Anfield is completely different from that at Old Trafford. Liverpool can be trusted to make sensible judgments in the summer transfer market and as Slot says, if a player is good enough, it doesn't matter where they come from.

Relive incredible Barcelona celebrations and emotional You’ll Never Walk Alone!

ThisIsAnfield.com - Tue, 05/07/2024 - 11:00

It is astonishing to think that one of Liverpool’s greatest-ever European nights unfolded five years ago, but the scenes from May 7, 2019 remain as emotional as they did on that glorious night.

“I said to the boys, ‘I think it’s impossible but because it’s you we have a chance.’ And we believed in this chance,” Jurgen Klopp revealed after the incredible 4-0 win.

With the Premier League title all but out of reach after Man City‘s win over Leicester only the night before and a three-goal deficit to overturn, the season was on the cusp of heartbreak.

But Anfield was not ready to accept defeat and neither were Klopp’s men, and what we witnessed on that night in 2019 will forever be etched in our memories and tales we tell future generations.

The immediate full-time scenes were simply incredible, and we will take every opportunity presented to us to relive it:

From the Kop and players breaking out into ‘Allez Allez Allez’ and then transitioning into You’ll Never Walk Alone, it was a spine-tingling moment that encapsulates what Klopp injected back into the club.

There was a dichotomy of utter disbelief and euphoria in the stands as the Reds mounted their comeback, with the passing of each goal sending fans in various emotional directions:

And once the dust had settled, it is no wonder Trent Alexander-Arnold wanted to soak up every last second of the atmosphere!

And don’t think we were not going to give you all the scenes from the stands without the highlights from the pitch, we’re not that cruel.

It all still leaves you in awe, and we would not have No. 6 without this glorious night:

What a team, what a night and what a club!
