Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham: Player Ratings

ThisIsAnfield.com - Sun, 05/05/2024 - 18:36

Liverpool picked up a 4-2 win at home to Tottenham on Sunday afternoon, with Harvey Elliott scoring a screamer and excelling overall.

Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham

Premier League (36), Anfield
May 5, 2024

Goals: Salah 16′, Robertson 45′, Gakpo 50′, Elliott 59′; Richarlison 72′, Son 77′

Alisson (out of 10) – 7

It’s been a while since Alisson enjoyed a nice quiet afternoon, but this was a stroll in the sunshine for much of the game.

The Brazilian was able to watch on as Liverpool dominated, displaying good awareness at one point after coming out of his box and showing calmness.

Made one good save to deny Brennan Johnson down low and was furious that the Reds conceded twice, as his day suddenly became busier.

Alexander-Arnold has been one of Liverpool’s better players in recent weeks and his quality was out in force on Sunday.

The 25-year-old whipped in some lovely crosses, picking out team-mates in inch-perfect fashion, and he also defended solidly.

Never stopped running and almost scored a ludicrous goal from near the halfway line.

Jarell Quansah – 7

Quansah was preferred to Ibrahima Konate – rightly so – and he was a class act for the most part.

On the ball, the youngster was composed as ever, and he went about his defensive work in unruffled fashion, despite the two goals going in after the break.

Not great for Richarlison’s goal, though, switching off – which loses him a mark.

Virgil van Dijk – 8

Van Dijk was in second gear all afternoon and still managed to be excellent, cruising through proceedings.

He did everything that was asked of him when called into action, which admittedly wasn’t too often, and his range of passing was impressive.

Did arguably get slightly lackadaisical at 4-0, but that’s being picky.

Two goals in a week for Robertson – what is this sorcery?!

The Scot was a bundle of energy down the left-hand side against Spurs, producing forceful runs, and he tapped home to put Liverpool 2-0 up.

A long-term replacement will need to be found, but he is still a force to be reckoned with.

Wataru Endo – 6

There is no doubt that Endo’s season has tailed off after a fantastic spell at one point, but he did solidly here.

The 31-year-old was neat and tidy in possession, if a little limited, and he bit into tackles and ensured the Reds won the midfield battle.

Elliott hasn’t always done as well from the start as he has off the bench this season, but he was magnificent at Anfield.

One outrageous first touch to take down a high ball outlined his technical ability, and he was always looking to provide guile.

Made it 4-0 with an outrageous strike – arguably his best goal for Liverpool to date.

Alexis Mac Allister – 6

Mac Allister’s form hasn’t quite been what it was a month or so ago, and while he did perfectly well against Spurs, it wasn’t a vintage showing.

The Argentine was guilty of losing the ball a few times early on, but he grew into the game and kept things ticking over.

Solid over spectacular.

All eyes were on Salah after his spat with Jurgen Klopp at West Ham and he produced a great response after a poor run of form.

The Liverpool legend was a constant threat in the first half, running at players and linking with team-mates, and he headed home the opener after hitting the crossbar shortly before.

Much more like it from Mo.

Luis Diaz – 7

Diaz deserves credit for some good performances during a terrible run for the Reds, and he again showed his endurance and trickery.

One acrobatic effort would have taken the imaginary roof off Anfield if it had gone in, and he dribbled at Spurs defenders and attempted to wreak havoc.

Got quieter as the game went on, though.

Gakpo deservedly kept his place after doing fairly well recently, starting in place of Darwin Nunez again.

The Dutchman did very well overall, holding the ball up better than Nunez and providing the assist for Salah’s goal, finding him with a lovely dinked cross.

He then made it 3-0 with a brilliant header, completing an eye-catching day.

Joe Gomez (on for Robertson, 64′) – 6

Made a vital goal-line clearance to keep the score at 4-2, but fell asleep for Richarlison’s goal.

Stefan Bajcetic (on for Endo, 64′) – 5

Great to see him back, but was far from sharpness.

Ryan Gravenberch (on for Mac Allister, 74′) – 5

A lazy cameo played a part in Spurs giving themselves hope. Needs to be better off the ball.

Darwin Nunez (on for Diaz, 74′) – 5

A fairly forgettable showing, barring a trademark one-on-one miss!

Dominik Szoboszlai (on for Elliott, 83′) – 6

Fired wide, but not on the pitch for long.

Subs not used: Kelleher, Konate, Bradley, Jones

Jurgen Klopp – 8

In his penultimate home game in charge, Klopp knew that a big performance was needed after such a flat run of form.

It was hard to have too many qualms with the manager’s starting lineup, with Quansah and Gakpo among those who merited starts, and Liverpool’s display was excellent.

This may not have been the huge game we thought it would be a month or so ago, but this was much more like the Reds of earlier in the season, barring the mini second-half collapse.

Just one more Anfield match for Klopp – it feels surreal saying that!

Cody Gakpo shows where he belongs as Liverpool fans hail forward’s “best game”

ThisIsAnfield.com - Sun, 05/05/2024 - 18:36

Cody Gakpo had an enjoyable day out against Tottenham, scoring and providing an assist in a markedly improved performance that caught the attention of the Liverpool faithful.

The 24-year-old has had a topsy-turvy campaign, and Jurgen Klopp has conceded on multiple occasions he played his part in knocking the Dutchman’s confidence by playing him in midfield.

Against Tottenham, though, we saw a player with confidence and one who enjoyed switching positions with Luis Diaz, alternating time in the middle with the left wing.

The wide left position is where he excelled at PSV, and against Spurs, it is where he dispatched a brilliantly placed ball for Mohamed Salah‘s opener.

Gakpo got on the end of a cross for a headed goal of his own in the second half in what was a much-improved outing for the No. 18, and it was not lost on Liverpool fans…

Gakpo was playing that pass every week for PSV, but hasn’t been able to for Liverpool because he’s never used on the left.

— Josh Williams (@DistanceCovered) May 5, 2024

Can we talk about Cody Gakpo assist? World class lofted pass matched with Salah’s run. Phenomenal player, technically gifted.

— Samuel (@SamueILFC) May 5, 2024

What a cross from Gakpo. I really want LFC to find a way to get him into these crossing situations (and having someone in the box) because he’s quite good at it.

— Olafur H. Tomasson (@Olafur_Tomasson) May 5, 2024

Gakpo such a clever player. Good movement. Better on ball than Nuñez and just helps the overall flow of the game ???

— keith costigan (@KeithCostigan) May 5, 2024

Gakpo at left wing is so good btw, I genuinely can't fathom how our management saw a player who's main strength at PSV was crossing/playmaking and thought we should try and make him a striker…#LIVTOT

— Matthew ? (@Matthew2024LFC) May 5, 2024

“Elliot was great today. Salah’s form is better. Gakpo too. Wondering if Slot will really get the best of Gakpo & especially Grav.”

Jota The Slotter in the comments.

— barry (@BackseatsmanLFC) May 5, 2024

Cody Gakpo has been absolutely brilliant for the last 2-3 weeks. One of the few whos maintained a level of performance while our season broke down around him. Slot will be excited to work with him

— – (@ThoseScouseLads) May 5, 2024

Cody Gakpo simply sensational today. So many gave up on him but there is a fantastic player there

— Moby (@Mobyhaque1) May 5, 2024

Gakpo is so much happier on that left side. He's so much better when he finds himself in those spaces with the ball passed to feet.

— Red (@TaintlessRed) May 5, 2024

Gakpo's best game since the Utd 7-0 win last year. Has himself a goal + an assist now, making a real difference. There's been no pressure on the game, but he's been outstanding today. https://t.co/DONKrcTrMR

— Will Comish (@WillComish) May 5, 2024

Since arriving at Anfield, Gakpo has been widely considered as the fifth-choice forward, but it will be intriguing to see how and if plans change in the post-Jurgen Klopp era.

On Sunday, though, Gakpo showed what he is capable of, and this performance ought to serve him well in the final two games before heading into the Euros and an important pre-season.

Liverpool 4 Tottenham 2 – Elliott and Salah boost Reds, more questions for Spurs

the Athletic - Sun, 05/05/2024 - 18:30

Liverpool won a high-scoring game against Tottenham as Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League farewell tour edges closer to its end.

Goals from Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson, Cody Gakpo and a stunner from Harvey Elliott gave the Reds a 4-0 lead that their performance had more than warranted.

Spurs improved greatly after a raft of substitutions and scored through Richarlison and Son Heung-min but, in truth, it was for the most part another underwhelming showing from Ange Postecoglou’s team.

Mark Carey, Ahmed Walid and Jack Pitt-Brooke discuss the key talking points…

Liverpool’s right flank wins the day

Narratives are often never far from Salah, and for the overwhelming majority of his time on Merseyside, they have been filled with positives.

In recent weeks, there have been some rare negatives to add to the collection, with performances that many have questioned. Was it a sign of his inevitable decline, or simply a blip? Based on his showing on Sunday afternoon, it seemed to be the latter.

go-deeper

There was an extra spring in the step as he received the ball, often making penetrating runs in behind to offer himself to his midfield team-mates. A back-post headed finish in the first half was rewarded for his rejuvenated display.

In truth, it was difficult to determine whether Liverpool’s strength on the right flank was down to Salah’s energy or Spurs’ weakness defensively. Emerson Royal did OK with the ball when inverting from left-back, but the Brazilian is not a natural on that side and looked lost out of possession.

Salah was constantly escaping Royal’s line of vision — and Liverpool were clearly looking to overload that side of the pitch to cross or shoot.

Alexis Mac Allister would occasionally drift over to help add further numbers, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross eventually found its way to Robertson to tap in, and Elliott’s cross for Gakpo’s goal came from a high regain on the right flank after Royal failed to clear his lines.

Elliott then scored Liverpool’s fourth, cutting inside and forcing his way past Rodrigo Bentancur before bending a superb left-footed strike into the top corner.

It made for a forgettable afternoon for Spurs’ full-back, who was replaced by Oliver Skipp after 61 minutes. His poor performance and Liverpool’s dominance in that part of the pitch showed just how much Spurs have missed the injured Destiny Udogie in the past three games.

Mark Carey

Spurs’ attack raises as many questions as defence

A lot will be said about Spurs’ defensive performance today, but football is not broken down into compartmentalised units — and the problems they had in the first hour at Anfield were not just to do with the back four.

This was another game when the attack that Postecoglou selected was unable to make any impact. It took the arrival of Richarlison and James Maddison from the bench on the hour mark for Spurs to launch the fightback that at least made the scoreline respectable.

Richarlison gave Spurs a focal point when he came on and took his goal well (Ben Stansall/AFP via Getty Images)

Spurs have a problem up front. This season, Son has played on the left to accommodate Richarlison through the middle. But today, Son was up front and Richarilson was on the bench. The problem is that Son, who started the season brilliantly, has faded recently. And while he is devastating running forward into space, he cannot hold up the ball.

This hurts the whole Spurs team because they can never relieve pressure. The team is better balanced with Richarlison up front and Son on the left — whatever you think about the former’s consistency in front of goal.

It also means that if Brennan Johnson plays, it must be on the right so he can get to the byline and whip balls into the box. This in turn means that if Dejan Kulusevski plays, it has to be in midfield — and not out wide.

Spurs will need answers to these questions — answers that can only be found in the transfer market, possibly — if they are to improve next season.

Jack Pitt-Brooke

Endo may not be perfect, but fits this Liverpool perfectly

Considering that most teams in the world want their No 6 to be elite both in and out of possession, Liverpool’s acquisition of Wataru Endo in the summer looked peculiar — especially given he was replacing Fabinho, even if the Brazilian was out of form.

However, as the season has progressed, Endo’s performance has been important to this Liverpool side. The Japan midfielder isn’t perfect — he doesn’t look the most comfortable on the ball and feels susceptible to the opponent’s press — but he fits how Jurgen Klopp’s side wants to play perfectly.

go-deeper

This season, Liverpool have been more direct and transitional in their style than the previous seasons, moving back to their previous nature in Klopp’s early years at the club, and that approach has helped Endo. The midfielder’s qualities off the ball — in terms of pressing, counter-pressing and fighting for second balls — thrive in these helter-skelter games of duels.

It helps that Liverpool haven’t left him stranded when they want to build up and progress the ball through the thirds. Usually, Mac Allister will drop next to Endo during the build-up phase or Alexander-Arnold will move into a narrow position. And on fewer occasions, Endo would drop between the centre-backs with the two players in front of him having more responsibility to progress the ball up the pitch.

Ahmed Walid

What did Jurgen Klopp say?

We will bring you this after he has spoken at the post-match press conference.

What did Ange Postecoglou say?

We will bring you this after he has spoken at the post-match press conference.

What next for Liverpool?

Monday, May 13: Aston Villa (A), Premier League, 8pm BST, 3pm ET

Jurgen Klopp’s side comfortably saw off Aston Villa 3-0 at Anfield the last time these two sides played each other back in early September, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Salah scoring either side of a Matty Cash own goal.

Liverpool have only lost two of their last 22 visits to Villa Park in the Premier League. However, their last defeat — in October 2020 — was that 7-2 thrashing. Since then, though, Liverpool have won the following two fixtures by a scoreline of 2-1 and 3-1 respectively.

What next for Spurs?

Saturday, May 11: Burnley (H), Premier League, 3pm BST, 10am ET

After a dramatic north London derby followed by trips to Stamford Bridge and Anfield, Spurs may finally feel as if they can breathe easier with a home game against Burnley next up.

History would certainly agree. As well as beating this Burnley side managed by Vincent Kompany 5-2 away in the league in September and 1-0 at home in the FA Cup in January, Spurs have never lost at home to Burnley in the Premier League. They’ve won seven of those eight matches (drawing the other) by an aggregate score of 19-2.

Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham: Reds survive late scare after 4-goal lead

ThisIsAnfield.com - Sun, 05/05/2024 - 18:25

Liverpool survived a late fightback from Tottenham to earn a 4-2 win in the Premier League at Anfield, having taken a deserved 4-0 lead before the hour.

Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham

Goals

Salah 16′ (assist – Gakpo)
Robertson 45′ (assist – Salah)
Gakpo 50′ (assist – Elliott)
Elliott 59′ (assist – Salah)
Richarlison 72′
Son 77′

Set to an upbeat atmosphere on an Anfield flag day, Liverpool started well as they controlled the tempo against Spurs, with a burst of early chances seeing them go close to an opener.

Harvey Elliott sent Mohamed Salah through for an effort saved by Guglielmo Vicario, with Cristian Romero then blocking on the line for the young midfielder’s follow-up.

Salah soon broke the deadlock, drifting into space to meet Cody Gakpo‘s perfect lofted ball and head through Vicario for 1-0 – his first goal in five league games.

There were penalty appeals as Gakpo was tripped and Romero appeared to handle in the box, while chance after chance after chance showed Liverpool’s dominance – though there was the familiar sense that another goal was needed.

It eventually came from a usually unlikely source in Andy Robertson, who tapped into an empty net after a one-two of sorts with Salah that saw Vicario push it into the left-back’s path for a second goal in as many games!

If Tottenham weren’t aware in the first half that Aston Villa had given up their advantage in the top-four race, they really should have been after half-time.

But they were throttled again throughout the second half, with the outstanding Elliott teeing Gakpo up for Liverpool’s third by pressing the pathetic Emerson Royal and then crossing for the Dutchman to head in.

Elliott then got the goal his afternoon deserved, with Royal standing off Salah to allow a simple lay-off before the No. 19 did the rest, finding space and hammering a strike into the top corner.

The extent of the lead allowed Jurgen Klopp to introduce Stefan Bajcetic for his first senior outing since September, replacing Wataru Endo to rapturous applause.

Spurs grabbed one back through a well-worked move finished by substitute Richarlison, denying a clean sheet Liverpool’s defence – and particularly Jarell Quansah – had deserved.

And then another through Heung-min Son, left in acres of space by the half-arsed Ryan Gravenberch to fire into the bottom corner for 4-2.

Salah should have poked in from three yards out and Trent Alexander-Arnold almost saw his 60-yard shot dip under the crossbar, before a crucial clearance from Joe Gomez kept out a third for Spurs.

Liverpool were able to hold onto their two-goal lead and see the game out, with an eye-catching win worthy of the occasion on Klopp’s penultimate Anfield clash.

Liverpool dent Tottenham's top-four hopes with big win

Liverpool FC on Sky Sports - Sun, 05/05/2024 - 18:25

Liverpool beat Tottenham 4-2 at Anfield to condemn the visitors to a fourth consecutive loss which leaves their hopes of Champions League qualification hanging by a thread.

The Reds were rampant for the opening hour, with Mohamed Salah, back in the side following his touchline spat with Jurgen Klopp against West Ham, heading them in front early on before Andrew Robertson added a second on the stroke of half-time.

Cody Gakpo then nodded Liverpool's third after the break before Harvey Elliott punished more poor Tottenham defending with a stunning fourth from long range soon afterwards.

Ange Postecoglou's side rallied to halve the deficit thanks to goals from substitute Richarlison and Heung-Min Son.

But in the end it was another painful afternoon for Spurs, who have lost four Premier League games in a row for the first time in 20 years and remain seven points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa with only three games left to play.

For Liverpool, out of the title-race picture in third place, the result at least raised hopes of a positive finish to Klopp's final campaign in charge.

How Liverpool overpowered poor Spurs

Salah's return to the Liverpool team was the dominant talking point ahead of kick-off and the Egyptian was in the thick of the action from the start, hitting the bar with a cross-shot and seeing a low effort repelled by Guglielmo Vicario before he scored the opener.

Mohamed Salah scored Liverpool's opening goal

His header, from Cody Gakpo's cross, was well-taken at the far post but it was poor from Tottenham's perspective, with makeshift left-back Emerson Royal leaving him unmarked.

Team news: Salah return

  • Mohamed Salah started for Liverpool following his touchline spat with Jurgen Klopp in the draw with West Ham.
  • Richarlison was dropped by Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, with Rodrigo Bentancur starting.

Liverpool continued to target the Brazilian, with Salah receiving plenty of support from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Elliott. Their second goal, after Spurs had survived a succession of other Liverpool chances, came from another attack down that side.

Andrew Robertson followed up on Salah's parried shot for the second

Robertson cleverly directed Alexander-Arnold's cross into the path of Salah initially, and when the winger's low, first-time effort was parried by Vicario, the left-back was on hand to convert the rebound, with the hapless Emerson playing him onside.

Tottenham defenders Emerson and Cristian Romero had to be separated by Vicario as tensions threatened to boil over as they walked off at the interval, and Spurs continued to collapse in the second half.

Cody Gakpo got on the end of Harvey Elliott's probing cross for the third

Emerson was partly at fault again as the excellent Elliot curled a stunning long-range effort into the top corner from 25 yards out soon after crossing for Gakpo to head the third.

It looked like a miserable afternoon could get even worse for Tottenham at that point as Liverpool continued to enjoy Klopp's penultimate home game as manager, but the visitors made the scoreline respectable with two goals in the space of five minutes.

Harvey Elliott struck a brilliant fourth goal

Richarlison scored the first, converting from Brennan Johnson's low cross, before teeing up Heung-in Son to mark his 300th Premier League appearance with a goal in a fifth consecutive Premier League game against Liverpool.

Richarlison converted from close range to score Tottenham's first

Those strikes added intrigue to the closing stages. Liverpool were indebted to substitute Joe Gomez for making a crucial, goal-line clearance to prevent Johnson from adding a Spurs third, but, that incident aside, the hosts looked the more likely scorers.

Salah had a goal chalked off for offside, substitutes Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai spurned good chances, and Alexander-Arnold saw an audacious long-range effort drop just over the bar, but four goals were more than enough in the end.

Heung-Min Son scored Spurs' second

Liverpool move to 78 points in third, four behind second-placed Manchester City, while Tottenham are now looking over their shoulders, only four points ahead of sixth-placed Newcastle with three games still to play.

Erik ten Hag on Bayern Munich 'shortlist' as Chelsea could beat Liverpool to $139m transfer

Liverpool.com - Sun, 05/05/2024 - 11:38

The Jürgen Klopp era is almost over at Liverpool. In just two weeks’ time, Anfield will be preparing to bid farewell to one of the most influential managers in its history.

Klopp takes in his penultimate home game later today as Tottenham arrives on Merseyside. With just three matches remaining this season, the German will be determined to end his time at the club on a high, especially after recent disappointing results.

Arne Slot looks set to be the man to take the reins after Klopp. The current Feyenoord boss insisted on Friday that a deal had not yet been finalized, although he remains confident he will become the next Liverpool boss.

And it won’t just be the Reds undergoing big changes this summer. Across Europe, there could be some monumental shifts to the footballing landscape.

Bayern Munich is among the clubs looking for a new manager. If the latest reports are to be believed, their search could lead Manchester United to start looking for a new boss as well.

Here, Liverpool.com takes a scan around the Premier League and across the continent to see what's going on at Liverpool's rivals.

Erik ten Hag on Bayern Munich shortlist

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is one of the candidates being considered to succeed Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich, according to Bild’s Christian Falk. The German club is still on the lookout for a new manager, having also been eyeing up Xabi Alonso along with Liverpool earlier this year.

Now, Bayern’s head of sport Max Eberl is said to be ‘checking’ three or four candidates for the job. Julen Lopetegui and Benfica’s Roger Schmidt join Ten Hag on the shortlist, while Roberto De Zerbi has told Brighton he wants to stay at the club.

Liverpool.com says: Eberl might want to take a look at some of United’s recent games if he’s seriously considering Ten Hag for the Bayern job. The amount of shots they’ve given up recently would probably have him reconsidering the choice.

The fact Bayern still hasn’t identified its next manager perhaps tells you all you need to know about the options available at the moment. The sooner Liverpool can get Slot over the line and begin preparing for next season, the better.

Chelsea makes contact for Victor Osimhen signing

Chelsea has made initial contact with Napoli about signing Victor Osimhen this summer, according to Gianluca Di Marzio. The Italian journalist suggests that Romelu Lukaku and another player could be used as part of an offer.

The report comes after Corriere dello Sport claimed earlier this week that Liverpool was eyeing up Osimhen as a potential replacement for Darwin Núñez. The Nigeria international is said to have a $139m (£111m/€130m) clause in his contract.

Liverpool.com says: If Chelsea has to part with Lukaku and another player as part of an offer for Osimhen, that tells you just how much he could end up costing. Would Liverpool really be willing to splash that much cash on a single player when other areas of the squad need addressing? We doubt it.
