Why is Jürgen Klopp leaving Liverpool? Reds boss' Anfield exit decision explained

Liverpool.com - 2 hours 39 min ago

It is a day that many Liverpool fans thought would never come. Jürgen Klopp will take charge of his final match against Wolves before leaving Anfield for the final time as manager.

Klopp stunned the football world when he announced in January that this would be his last season in charge. At the time, Liverpool was in the mix for four trophies but have had to settle for one, winning the Carabao Cup against Chelsea at Wembley.

A return to the Champions League has been secured and Klopp's replacement, expected to be Arne Slot, is inheriting a very talented squad with young players ready to step up in the biggest matches.

When he announced he would be stepping down, Klopp told Liverpool's official website that he was 'running out of energy'. He has been in charge for nine years and has been in management consistently since his first job at Mainz in 2001.

He added: "I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again. "I have never lived a normal life. That is true. Having three or four weeks in the summer was enough, but not anymore."

Klopp will take at least a year out from management before returning to the touchline. He also maintains he will never manage another Premier League club.

In his final interview with Liverpool's official website, he expanded further on his decision: "There was a day, a week, two weeks, three weeks, when I realized I can't do it anymore.

"You play the season while you play the season, but you plan the next season. It's not that you talk about it but it's constant. I used to watch players we signed two years earlier, watching them, you follow them, have a look, you speak to them and that's how it goes. I didn't have the power to do it anymore. That's not possible.

"You cannot do it like that. I can't do that for a week and say, 'Come on. You can do it next week.' But it was not that we had no time. I just couldn't get up for it anymore. For me it was immediately clear, 'OK, here I have to stop.' I always said, in the moment I realize I am not the right manager for the club anymore I will tell [them] and that's what I did. Since then, I didn't have one doubt. There was not one second where I thought [about staying]."

Klopp is now planning to spend time travelling with his wife Ulla. The couple have a home in Mallorca and are expected to spend their time between there and Germany.

He added: "People ask me, 'What are you (going to do?)'. I just don't know. I never had it, so let's give it a try and then I tell you."

How much was Jürgen Klopp paid by Liverpool? Full salary as legendary manager departs

Liverpool.com - 3 hours 3 min ago

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp sent shockwaves around the football world when he announced that he would leave the club at the end of the current Premier League season. After nine years in charge of the Reds, Klopp will finally bid an emotional farewell as Liverpool takes on Wolves at Anfield.

Klopp cited a lack of energy as the principle reason for his departure from Anfield. While it was an unexpected announcement back in January, it was one that many understand after the untold pressure of managing a club of Liverpool's magnitude.

Klopp is set for a year's sabbatical, and is uncertain what the future holds. In his press conference ahead of Liverpool's FA Cup clash against Norwich earlier this year, Klopp outlined: "Whatever will happen in the future I don’t know now, but no club, no country, for the next year, and no other English club ever."

By leaving Liverpool, Klopp will also be leaving behind a huge salary, which made him one of the highest-paid managers in world football. Some of those figures were laid bare when he was linked with the Germany national team job, and the German FA publicly admitted it would be hard to match the figures he currently earns.

“The DFB can’t pay Jürgen Klopp at all, he earns a fixed €24m ($26m/£21m) a year, plus €26m ($28m/£22m) guaranteed advertising income — so €50m ($54m/£43m),” the German FA's Ralph-Uwe Schaffert said in a recent interview (via Focus).

“The next national coach will no longer get what Hansi Flick got — because the DFB can no longer afford it,” Schaffert continued. “You hardly have a Bundesliga coach who earns less than a million. It’s all gone so crazy that it’s almost impossible to reduce it.”

Alongside his massive salary, Klopp has had a host of sponsorship deals to top up his income. He's now sponsored by Adidas after previous deals with Puma and New Balance. He's also the face of German car company Opel, beer giants Erdinger and two financial institutions, VR-Bank and Deutsche Vermogensberatung.

He signed his last Liverpool contract in April 2022, a two-year extension which was supposed to keep him at Anfield until the summer of 2026. However, he will now leave early to take a hard-earned break with plenty of financial power to enjoy his sabbatical.

It's reported that only Pep Guardiola and Diego Simeone earn more than Klopp. His successor, Arne Slot, will almost certainly earn far less.

Liverpool trio rejoin final training session as Jurgen Klopp moves out of the AXA

ThisIsAnfield.com - 3 hours 21 min ago

Jurgen Klopp‘s final training session saw Ben Doak, Thiago and Diogo Jota all involved after injury, with the manager packing up his office afterwards.

With Liverpool’s season closer against Wolves on Sunday, the squad took in their final preparations at the AXA Training Centre the day before.

And as Klopp prepares to depart, it meant the manager oversaw his last training session before leaving the club.

The only senior player to miss out was Joel Matip, with the centre-back sadly not fit enough to take part as he recovers from a serious ACL injury.

Doak made a welcome return to parts of training, however, after undergoing surgery to correct a knee problem in December, while Jota and Thiago were also involved after rejoining the group earlier in the week.

Jota is the most likely to be included in the matchday squad to face Wolves, though there is a chance Thiago makes the bench for what will also be his farewell.

There was no place for any of Liverpool’s academy regulars, with the season already over for the U21s and U18s and the players embarking on the summer holidays.

Given it is an incredibly strong group available, there would have been no need for the likes of James McConnell, Trey Nyoni, Lewis Koumas or Kaide Gordon to make up the numbers either way.

For what it’s worth, Bobby Clark and Jayden Danns saw their seasons end early due to injury.

There was emotion on Klopp’s face as he left the training pitch after a spirited session, with the manager then heading to his office to help pack up his belongings.

In a post on his new Instagram page, @kloppo, the 56-year-old reflected on his final day at the training ground and vowed to stay professional until the final whistle at around 6pm on Sunday.

“So, here I am, last day in the office. Last session done,” Klopp told his followers, which stood at 1.5 million after less than 24 hours of his account going live.

“It was kind of strange, I would say. A few of the coaches got quite emotional. I didn’t yet, I told myself tomorrow’s the game and after that is holiday.

“Obviously I decide what I think, until I get overwhelmed tomorrow!

“So I will leave this place today, which is…an interesting experience, I would say. See you tomorrow.”

Tomorrow has now arrived, with Liverpool heading to Anfield in the early afternoon for an occasion which – clash with Wolves aside – will be fraught with emotion for all involved.

Jürgen Klopp has already discussed managing another Premier League club after Liverpool

Liverpool.com - 3 hours 26 min ago

Jürgen Klopp is set to take charge of his final match. After facing Wolves, the Reds boss will leave Liverpool and take a break, though he hasn't necessarily retired.

While there is a chance Klopp could return to the dugout after his sabbatical, he has made one thing clear - it will not be with another Premier League club. "If you ask me, ‘Will you ever work as a manager again?’ I would say now no," Klopp explained to Liverpool's official website when the shock decision to step away was first announced.

"But I don’t know obviously how that will feel because I never had the situation. What I know definitely – I will never, ever manage a different club in England than Liverpool, 100 per cent. That’s not possible. My love for this club, my respect for the people is too big. I couldn’t.

"I couldn’t for a second think about it. There’s no chance. This is part of my life, we are part of the family, we feel home here. There’s no chance to do that. But all the rest, will I ever work again? Of course, I know myself, I cannot just sit around."

It seems unlikely that Klopp will be able to stay away from the game forever. After refreshing himself with a holiday and some time with his family, there will be no shortage of options to come back to soccer again.

"I will find something else maybe to do," he said. "But I will not manage a club or a country at least for a year. That’s not possible. I cannot do that and I don’t want to."

Liverpool.com says: It is impossible to imagine Klopp representing any other Premier League side. He wouldn't want that, quite clearly. It is hard to see him at many other club sides, either, though. Perhaps he could return to Borussia Dortmund but the most likely option, even after Julian Nagelsmann signed a contract extension, is that he takes over the German national team.

No matter what happens at the European Championship in the summer, Nagelsmann is destined to take a club job again sooner rather than later, and there won't be someone in the national hotseat for too long. As soon as there is a vacancy, Klopp is the obvious pick.
