Liverpool Prepares ‘Normally’ For ‘Special’ Europa League Final Vs. Sevilla

Tue, 17/05/2016 - 19:24

It may the biggest game of the season for Liverpool, but Jurgen Klopp insisted Tuesday that preparation for the UEFA Europa League final hasn’t differed to any other game on its road to Basel, Switzerland.

The Reds take on Sevilla at St. Jakob-Park on Wednesday aiming to bring home their first piece of silverware since 2012.

Interest surrounding the game has, understandably, reached fever-pitch level, as Klopp and his team attempt to secure a trophy in his first campaign at the helm.

However, within the perimeter of Melwood, things haven’t varied to the manner in which Liverpool previously prepared for the likes of Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund and Villarreal.

Speaking at his pregame press conference, reporters quizzed Klopp on how he’s preparing the Reds for the showpiece final.

“As normally as possible because the special circumstances are obvious,” he responded.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display( "gpt-ad-desktop-out-of-page" ); });

“It’s clear we have to do more press work, everything changes in a moment like this. In the last two weeks, nobody has asked us about the next Premier League game — everybody has asked us about this game, everyone wants tickets and it’s a special situation, so the rest needs to be as usual as possible.

“If not, we would have done a lot of things wrong in preparing for all the other games. We had special games, we were under pressure at home against Villarreal because we were 1-0 down (from the first leg). Then we were under pressure in Dortmund, we were under pressure at home against Dortmund in the game. But these boys always did a perfect job, so why should I change?

“If I change they could think ‘oh, maybe he thinks we are not ready.’ I am sure they are ready and that is what I want them to feel. We feel good, I’m really pleased for the boys — I am really pleased I can be part of this moment with this team.”

Europa League Final Odds: Liverpool Favored Over Sevilla In Basel Showdown

Tue, 17/05/2016 - 17:06

Sevilla will be aiming to claim a third consecutive UEFA Europa League championship Wednesday when it battles Liverpool in the final as +210 betting underdogs at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.

The Sevillistas are coming off a dominating 3-1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk earlier this month in the second leg of their semifinal matchup, easily advancing by an aggregate score of 5-3. But Sevilla has claimed just one victory in its past five games heading into Wednesday afternoon’s final at St. Jakob-Park in Basel, Switzerland.

Sevilla has struggled down the stretch in La Liga play, getting outscored by an 8-2 margin in three losses to wrap up the campaign in seventh place. The club failed to qualify for next year’s Europa League on the strength of its record. That leaves a lot on the line for Sevilla in this year’s final.

Sevilla can lock up a berth in next year’s Europa League with a win over Barcelona in next week’s Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) final.

Despite entering the final on the heels of some shaky performances, Sevilla has been dominant in Europa League action, outscoring opponents 14-7 during this season’s tournament and losing in just four of 22 games since the beginning of last season.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display( "gpt-ad-desktop-out-of-page" ); });

Liverpool odds:
After wrapping up the Premier League season with a pair of draws to finish a disappointing eighth in the standings, Liverpool travels to Basel to take on Sevilla as solid +140 favorites at the sportsbooks.

After posting a pair of wins and four draws to advance through the knockout stages, the Reds eked out a Round of 32 win over Augsburg before outlasting Manchester United in the Round of 16. Liverpool then eliminated Borussia Dortmund in the quarterfinals, stunning the tournament favorites with a 4-3 win in the second leg of their matchup while pegged as +210 underdogs.

Liverpool suffered its only defeat of this year’s tournament in the first leg of its semifinal matchup with Villarreal, dropping a 1-0 decision on the road before rebounding with a 3-0 shutout win in the second leg. But the Reds have tallied just one victory overall in their past seven contests away from Anfield.

Liverpool last won the Europa League title in 2001, failing to advance past the Round of 16 in their past three appearances. But it’s three tournament championships leaves it trailing only Sevilla, which has emerged as Europa League winners four times in the past 10 years.

Liverpool Snatches Draw With Chelsea On Christian Benteke’s Late Goal

Thu, 12/05/2016 - 00:10

Liverpool’s final home game of the season ended with a draw, as Christian Benteke’s stoppage-time goal rescued a 1-1 result against Chelsea at Anfield on Wednesday.

Eden Hazard put the Blues ahead in the Premier League contest, having quelled the hosts’ early dominance with a first-half strike all of his own making at the Kop end.

The Reds took to the task of finding a way past Guus Hiddink’s well-organized unit and finally did so in the closing minutes, with Benteke converting when Asmir Begovic failed to deal with Sheyi Ojo’s cross. Read more on LiverpoolFC.com >>

Watch Liverpool Vs. Chelsea Premier League Game Online (Live Stream)

Wed, 11/05/2016 - 17:38

Be in place for the start of Liverpool’s Premier League game against Chelsea, as the teams are likely to score early and perhaps often.

The Reds will host the Blues on Wednesday at Anfield in their penultimate game of the 2015-16 Premier League season. Liverpool beat Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge in October, and another victory over their southern rivals can lift the Reds into sixth place — a position that would earn them qualification to next season’s UEFA Europa League.

Wednesday’s game will mark Jurgen Klopp’s 50th game as Liverpool manager. The German took charge at Anfield in October, bringing a fresh attitude to the club.

Klopp is the fastest manager to reach 50 games in charge for #LFC– reaching the milestone in just 217 days. Hectic.

Klopp likely will welcome the returns of Nathaniel Clyne, Emre Can, James Milner, Dejan Lovren, Daniel Sturridge and Kolo Toure. Klopp rested the six of them in Sunday’s victory over Watford.

Chelsea’s disappointing season is heading to a close, but the game against Liverpool will capture attention nonetheless. Manager Guus Hiddink will field a makeshift team, as John Terry is suspended and Diego Costa, Loic Remy, Pedro and Kurt Zuma all will miss the game because of injuries.

Liverpool Clinches Europa League Final Spot With Victory Vs. Villarreal

Fri, 06/05/2016 - 00:23

Liverpool will play in the 2015-16 Europa League final after another famous European night at Anfield saw them defeat Villarreal 3-0 (3-1 on aggregate) to book a trip to Basel, Switzerland later this month.

Backed by a typically vociferous home crowd, the Reds overturned the 1-0 deficit the Yellow Submarine carved out in Spain to secure a place in the 12th European final in the club’s history.

The pressure told in the early moments, as Daniel Sturridge forced Bruno Soriano to turn into his own net at the Kop end, to bring the tie level on aggregate.

Liverpool continued its relentless approach in the second period, and sealed progression from the semifinals with goals from Sturridge and Adam Lallana to cap a magnificent performance. Click to read more at LiverpoolFC.com >>

Watch Liverpool Vs. Villarreal Europa League Semifinal Online (Live Stream)

Thu, 05/05/2016 - 20:10

Liverpool could use another one of those famous Anfield nights.

The Reds will host Villarreal on Thursday in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League semifinal series. Villarreal carries a 1-0 lead into the game, thanks to Adrian Lopez’s late goal on April 28 in the first leg. Liverpool hopes home fans’ backing will help it overturn the narrow deficit and earn a place in its first European final since 2007.

Villarreal is in fine form, having clinched fourth place in La Liga (Spain’s first division) and a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League. The “Yellow Submarine” is faring even better in the Europa League, having gone 12 games unbeaten and not conceded a goal in 280 minutes — just over three games.

Liverpool can join Valencia in 2003-04 and FC Porto in 2010-11 among teams that have topped Villarreal in the semifinals. The Reds will attempt to do so without suspended defender Mamadou Sakho and injured midfielders Jordan Henderson and Emre Can and striker Divock Origi.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display( "gpt-ad-desktop-out-of-page" ); });

The winner will face either Sevilla or Shakhtar Donetsk in the final May 18 in Basel, Switzerland.

All eyes will be on Anfield on Thursday night as the Reds look to overturn a 1-0 aggregate deficit to reach their first European final since 2007.

The supporters at the famous old stadium already have played their part in their team getting this far, with the atmosphere during the unforgettable quarterfinal win over Borussia Dortmund inspiring a remarkable comeback.

Klopp expects a similar reception when Marcelino’s men visit Merseyside and says the knowledge that support during the game also will come from much further afield than L4 is a huge boost to his squad.

“I have not enough words for this,” Klopp said Wednesday at his pregame press conference. “It’s one of the things in life you cannot buy.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display( "gpt-ad-desktop-out-of-page" ); });

“Feeling things like this is the most special (thing), I think that’s the main thing of football. These moments when you really know we are all together.

“It’s not only the crowd in the stadium, I saw a few videos of how fans were celebrating our fourth goal (against Dortmund) at home, and I’m pretty sure not everybody had their mobile phone on, so a lot of wonderful celebrations were missed because of this fact.

“It is a moment — I don’t want to make it too big to be honest — but it’s a moment only (in) football. It’s a moment for the whole Liverpool world, all the fans around the world … ” Read more from Klopp on LiverpoolFC.com >>
